Grooming Guide for Long-Fur Rabbits
(Such as Angora Rabbits)
Grooming long-fur rabbits is essential to keep them healthy and comfortable. Rabbits like Angoras have thick fur that can easily become matted if not properly maintained.
Why Grooming Is Important
Matted fur occurs when the rabbit’s fur becomes tangled and compacted. Removing severe mats can take several days and may be uncomfortable for the rabbit. Once your rabbit is mat-free, daily grooming helps prevent future problems.
After removing mats, groom your rabbit every day or every other day for 5–10 minutes to maintain their coat. Grooming time can become a special bonding experience—you can talk to your bunny and enjoy this calm, shared routine.
Problems Caused by Matted Fur
Matted fur can lead to:
Painful pulling or ripping of the skin
Discomfort when moving
Skin irritation and infections
Housing Tips for Long-Fur Rabbits
Proper housing helps prevent fur from getting dirty or tangled.
Use a hay rack: Loose hay can get caught in long fur.
Clean the litter box daily or every other day: This keeps fur clean and dry.
Provide clean bedding: Clean housing prevents debris from sticking to the fur.
Grooming Tools
Long-fur rabbits require different grooming tools than short-fur rabbits. Their coats are thick and delicate, so harsh tools should be avoided.
Use gentle combs or tools designed for long, dense fur
Avoid tools like the Hair Buster, which can be too harsh and may pull fur away from the skin
