Lion Head Rabbit Grooming Guide
This guide covers the grooming process for Lion Head Rabbits. Lion Heads fall between standard short-fur rabbits and long-fur rabbits such as Angoras.
About Lion Head Rabbits
Lion Head Rabbits are:
Known for the distinctive fur around their head that resembles a lion’s mane
Able to have standard to long fur on their body
Sometimes covered in long fur over their entire body
Often have extra-long fur around their bottom, called a skirt or double mane
Known to be vocal and expressive about their opinions
Unlike Angora rabbits, Lion Heads are generally similar in size to other small rabbit breeds.
Why Grooming Is Important?
Regular grooming prevents matted fur, which occurs when fur becomes tangled and knotted. Removing severe mats can take several days, so prevention is key.
Once your rabbit is mat-free, weekly grooming will help maintain healthy fur. Grooming time can also be a bonding experience—talk to your bunny, stay calm, and enjoy the process together
Housing Tips for Lion Head Rabbits
Proper housing helps keep fur clean and tangle-free:
Use a hay rack—loose hay can get stuck in long fur
Clean the litter box every few days
Keep clean bedding in their enclosure to prevent debris from sticking to fur
